THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for New York
Fiber gives Verizon customers fast, low-latency service for demanding use, with up to 940 Mbps download and 880 Mbps upload on the 1 Gig plan, earning a 69/100 Speed Score that is above New York’s city average. This is a strong, competitive option, but fiber availability depends on the address and reaches about 79% of the city for Verizon’s 1 Gig and 500 Mbps plans. Verizon also offers fixed wireless at up to 300 Mbps download and 75 Mbps upload, but its performance can be less consistent than fiber.
Speeds and reach below are what the provider files with the FCC for each technology tier, by census block. The plans it actually sells here, with their own speeds and prices, are under Pricing & Plans; the two can differ.
About Verizon
Verizon’s fiber plans offer excellent everyday performance, including symmetrical speeds of up to 940 Mbps, 500 Mbps, or 300 Mbps for streaming, work, gaming, and multiple users. Fiber availability is address-dependent, reaching about 79% of the city, while the 5G Home fallback offers adequate speeds of up to 300 Mbps down and 75 Mbps up at about 81% coverage, so check your address for fiber first.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for New York
Starry is a competitive option in New York, with its top Speed Score of 77/100 above the city average. Starry Gigabit offers up to 1000 Mbps download and 500 Mbps upload for $45/mo promotional pricing, making it a strong fixed-wireless choice, although fixed wireless can be less consistent than wired connections. That plan is available to about 69% of the city, so confirm your address before choosing it, and consider checking other providers if wired service is available.

About Starry Inc
Starry Inc is a good option for many households, especially if you want fast, affordable service without a data cap. Its fixed wireless Starry Gigabit offers up to 1000 Mbps download and 500 Mbps upload for $45 per month initially, with good performance, while Starry 500 and Starry Internet 300 Mbps offer less speed at lower prices. These plans are available to about 69% of the city, so check your address because Starry’s strong option is location-dependent and fixed wireless can be less consistent than fiber or cable.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for New York
Households needing very fast service may find Nuvisions appealing, with its Copper plan offering up to 1000 Mbps download and 1000 Mbps upload and a 77/100 Speed Score, above New York’s 60 average. Availability depends on your address, and the lower-tier Copper plan reaches only up to 100 Mbps download and upload with a 22/100 score, so consider checking other providers first if the faster plan is unavailable.
Speeds and reach below are what the provider files with the FCC for each technology tier, by census block. The plans it actually sells here, with their own speeds and prices, are under Pricing & Plans; the two can differ.
About Nuvisions
Households that need fast service for streaming, gaming, or working from home may find Nuvisions worthwhile, with an up to 1000 Mbps copper plan that has a good Speed Score of 77 and reaches about 2% of census blocks. Availability is address-dependent, and the fallback up to 100 Mbps copper plan has a Speed Score of 22 and reaches about 1%, so check for the faster option first because the lower-speed plan may not be enough for modern household needs.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for New York
For households seeking affordable internet for streaming, browsing, and everyday work, T-Mobile is an adequate fixed wireless option with plans offering up to 500 Mbps download and 60 Mbps upload, earning a 69/100 Speed Score that is above New York’s 60 city average. Fixed wireless can be more variable than wired service, so households needing consistently low latency or heavy-duty performance should check what other technologies are available at their address. The 500 Mbps plans are available to about 87% of the city and require a qualifying credit check, a postpaid voice line, and a new Internet line with a bundle.

Satellite internet can handle everyday browsing, streaming, and video calls, but its higher latency may be noticeable for gaming and other real-time uses. Starlink’s Residential Max plan offers up to 400 Mbps download and 40 Mbps upload for $130 per month, with a Speed Score of 69/100, above New York’s city average of 60, and is available to 100.0% of the city. Because satellite performance can be more limited than wired alternatives, check what other technologies are available at your specific address before deciding.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for New York
At $94.99/mo for the first 12 months, then $119.99/mo, HughesNet’s Fusion satellite plan buys up to 100 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, but its 22/100 Speed Score is below New York’s city average of 60. Although Fusion is available to 100.0% of the city, satellite’s higher latency and limited performance make it worth checking other providers available at your address first, especially for gaming, video calls, or heavy streaming.

About HughesNet
HughesNet costs $39.99 to $94.99 per month for the first 12 months, then $49.99 to $119.99, but those prices buy satellite service with speeds up to 25 Mbps, 50 Mbps, or 100 Mbps down and below-average performance, including Fusion’s 22/100 Speed Score. Since satellite can have high latency and limited performance for modern needs, check your address for fiber or cable first, and treat HughesNet as a fallback if faster options are unavailable.

New York Internet FAQs
Who is the best internet provider in New York, NY?
Verizon is the best overall provider, with fiber up to 2,048/2,048 Mbps reaching about 44% of New York. Its fastest tier is location-dependent, while Verizon’s broader footprint reaches about 92% overall across technologies, making address-level checking essential before ordering.
What is the fastest internet in New York, NY?
Verizon’s 2,048/2,048 Mbps fiber is the fastest qualifying internet tier, reaching about 44% of New York. It is the fastest widely meaningful option in the data, but availability depends on the specific building rather than Verizon’s full overall footprint.
Which internet provider covers the most of New York, NY?
Verizon covers the most among non-satellite providers, reaching about 92% of New York across all technologies. Satellite service is available everywhere, but Verizon is the broadest listed terrestrial provider and also offers fiber where its network reaches.
What is the cheapest internet plan in New York, NY?
The cheapest plans are Spectrum Internet 100 at $30/mo promotional pricing for 12 months, reaching about 89%, and Starry Internet 300 Mbps at $30/mo, reaching about 69%. Spectrum requires new residential customers without service in the past 30 days; confirm eligibility for either plan.
Can I get fiber internet in New York?
Verizon fiber reaches about 44% of New York at 2,048/2,048 Mbps, while its 940/880 Mbps tier reaches about 79%. Spectrum fiber reaches about 16% and Astound Broadband fiber about 5%, so building-level availability determines which fiber options you can order.
What internet speed do I need in New York?
A 300 Mbps plan covers common work, streaming, and shared-household needs, while 500 Mbps or more suits heavier simultaneous use. New York plans range from 25 Mbps HughesNet Lite to Verizon’s 2,048/2,048 Mbps fiber where available, so household demand and address eligibility matter.
Is fast fiber available in Harlem?
ZIP 10027 reports Verizon 2,048/2,048 Mbps fiber across about 36% of listed coverage and 940/880 Mbps fiber across about 29%. That makes fast fiber a real Harlem option, but the separate ZIP shares show why you should verify the exact building.
Is Verizon Fiber better than Spectrum in New York?
Verizon Fiber's 1 Gig plan is $89.99/mo with 880 Mbps upload; Spectrum's is $60/mo with 35 Mbps upload. Verizon Fiber sells up to 940 Mbps here and Spectrum up to 1,000 Mbps. Spectrum reaches more of New York (about 88% vs 79%), so check which one your address gets.
Is Starlink worth it in New York?
Rarely. Starlink starts at $55/mo, and cable or fiber reaches about 95% of New York. It makes the most sense at an address with no wired or 5G home internet option.
Is $100 a month a lot for internet in New York?
For most homes, yes. A 1 Gig plan in New York costs $45 (Starry), $60 (Spectrum), $89.99 (Verizon) a month in our latest price check. If you pay more than $80 for a gig, your promo price may have ended.
How We Analyze Internet in New York
FCC Broadband Data
We use the FCC National Broadband Map, updated twice a year with provider-reported coverage at the census block level.
Speed Score
A state-wide percentile of each plan’s maximum advertised download speed against every option filed with the FCC in the state, all technologies on one scale. It is not a measured speed test.
Coverage Calculation
Provider coverage shows what percentage of census blocks in New York report service availability from each provider.

How We Calculate Speed Score
The Speed Score is a state-wide percentile from 0 to 100. It answers one question: of every internet option filed with the FCC in this state, across every technology, what share is slower than this plan’s maximum advertised download speed?
What goes in:
- The plan’s maximum advertised download speed, as the provider files it with the FCC and lists it for sale.
- Every other serviceable option in the state from the FCC Broadband Data Collection, counted by the census blocks it reaches.
Speed Score = share of the state’s filed options with a lower advertised download speed
A score of 85 means this plan’s advertised speed beats 85% of the options filed in the state. Fiber, cable, DSL, fixed wireless and satellite are all on the same scale, so a 1,000 Mbps plan scores the same whoever sells it.
What it is not: a measured speed test. It does not include latency, upload speed, reliability or congestion. Real throughput at an address varies with wiring, equipment and time of day.
How providers are ordered on this page: each provider’s tier scores are averaged across the census blocks it serves, then multiplied by the share of the city it reaches. Wired providers rank ahead of wireless-only ones, and satellite last, because their filings describe a signal footprint rather than a plant. The same rule sets the title and the 30-second verdict.

How We Calculate Capabilities
Estimated Capabilities predict how well each internet plan supports common household activities based on speed requirements and connection type.
Rating Scale:
- Excellent – Optimal performance, handles peak usage easily
- Good – Reliable performance with minimal issues
- Fair – Functional but may experience slowdowns during heavy use
- Poor – Not recommended; expect frequent buffering or lag
How We Rate Each Category:
Streaming
Based on download speed. 4K streaming requires 25+ Mbps per stream; HD requires 5+ Mbps. We account for multiple simultaneous streams.
Multi-device
Evaluates total bandwidth capacity divided by typical household device count (phones, tablets, smart TVs, computers). Fiber and cable handle many devices better than DSL or satellite.
Gaming
Considers both upload speed (for sending game data) and latency (ping time). Fiber and cable excel here; satellite connections struggle due to inherent signal delay.
Whole Home
Assesses whether the connection can reliably serve an entire household during peak evening hours. Factors in technology type (shared vs. dedicated bandwidth) and total speed capacity.
Note: Actual performance depends on your specific location, network congestion, and equipment quality.
