Salespeople sell gigabit plans the way car dealers sell the extended warranty: by making you feel reckless for hesitating. But most households are paying for a sixteen-lane superhighway to drive a single scooter down. Here's how much speed you actually need — in plain numbers, with zero fear-mongering — so you can buy exactly enough and pocket the difference.

First, the only vocabulary you need. Speed is measured in Mbps (megabits per second). More devices online at once, and more simultaneous streaming or calling, means you want more Mbps. That's the entire formula. Everything else is marketing. Now, the real numbers behind it.

What each activity actually uses

These are per-stream, real-world ballparks — not the inflated "recommended" figures providers quote to nudge you upward:

Upload: the secret hero everyone ignores

Here's what the speed-tier obsession misses entirely. Download brings the world to you; upload sends you to the world. If you work from home, upload is what carries your face and your voice on every call — skimp on it and you're the person who freezes mid-sentence. It's also what backs up your photos, sends big files, and streams your gameplay.

This is why a 300 Mbps fiber plan with matching 300 up will out-feel a 1,000 Mbps cable plan stuck with 35 up for most real people. The headline number lost; the upload number won. If you do anything more than consume, weight upload heavily in your decision. Watch the two plans actually race:

Latency: the number speed tests bury

Speed is how much data moves; latency (or "ping," measured in milliseconds) is how fast it reacts. For gamers, latency decides whether you win the duel or respawn. For everyone else, low latency is why a page snaps open instead of hesitating. You can have a huge plan that still feels laggy, and a modest plan that feels instant. Fiber generally wins here; satellite, beaming to orbit and back, is the toughest place to get low latency.

That pause you just felt? That's every click, every page, every shot fired — all day. The tier number never fixes it.

600 ms is old-school geostationary satellite territory. Modern low-orbit satellite lands around 40–60 ms; fiber sits in the low teens.

Data caps: the other gotcha

A few providers still bolt a monthly data cap onto otherwise fine plans — stream a lot of 4K and a big household can bump into it, triggering overage fees or throttling. If you're a heavy streaming home, "unlimited data" can matter more than an extra few hundred Mbps you'll never touch. Check the cap before the speed:

The myth that won't die: "more Mbps is always faster"

Here's the part the upsell depends on you not knowing: once a plan comfortably clears your real peak, extra Mbps does almost nothing for daily life. Jumping from 600 to 1,000 won't make a single web page load faster or a single show start sooner if you were never maxing out 600 in the first place. What you actually feel day to day is latency, upload, your Wi-Fi, and rush-hour congestion — none of which the tier number fixes.

Buying a bigger plan to cure slowness is like buying a faster car to escape a traffic jam.

When you genuinely should get a gig

To be fair, sometimes the big number earns its keep:

  • You routinely move massive files — video editors, photographers, developers pushing huge uploads.
  • You have a genuinely packed household — many heavy users and a small army of 4K screens at once.
  • The gig is fiber and barely costs more than the mid tier — then take the symmetrical upload and the headroom; it's a fine deal.

Outside of those? You're paying for bragging rights. There's no shame in a plan that's simply right-sized.
