US Internet Quality Map

This map divides the country into areas and colors each by its average internet quality — the typical home’s Speed Score (0–100) for the selected technology, not the single best plan on one street. Darker teal means better service for most homes; pale means patchy; grey means the technology isn’t there. We track 109 leading providers across 51 states, over 6,040 areas. Pick a technology, filter to a single provider to see where they actually reach, or click any area for its typical-and-best scores.

Per-state technology availability (block-weighted: share of census blocks where each technology is offered). “Top speed” is the fastest plan available anywhere in the state (same methodology as our provider pages); “typical speed” is the market-middle download. Click a column to sort.

How to read this map

Each hexagon’s color is the population-weighted average Speed Score for the selected technology — we take every home’s best available plan score (0 if that technology isn’t offered to that home) and average it across the area, weighting by where people live. So it answers “how good is internet for a typical home here,” not “does one fast plan exist somewhere.” The popup also shows the single best plan’s score (the number our provider pages display). Data: FCC broadband serviceability + ServiceabilityScore + Census LODES (block centroids and residential population), binned to H3 resolution 4 hexes.

Fiber

Light over glass strands — the fastest, lowest-latency option. Averages high in metros where it’s widespread, low or grey in rural areas where few homes can get it.

Cable

Coaxial cable-TV lines. Fast downloads, broad reach in towns and suburbs, so it averages well across more of the map than fiber.

Fixed Wireless

Home internet beamed from a cell tower (T-Mobile, Verizon, and regional WISPs). It reaches more areas than cable or fiber, so it’s the widest wired-alternative on the map — speeds depend on tower distance and congestion.

Satellite

From orbit (Starlink, HughesNet, Viasat). Reaches ~every home (never grey) but with modest Speed Scores — a uniform mid-tone, the rural fallback.

Frequently asked questions

What does an area's color mean?

Color is the area's AVERAGE Speed Score for the selected technology (0-100) — how good internet is for a typical home there, population-weighted across its census blocks. Homes with no service of that technology count as 0, so an area where only one block has fiber averages LOW, not high. Darker teal = better on average; pale = patchy; grey = not available at all.

Why is the average different from the '99' on your provider pages?

The provider pages show the BEST plan's score — e.g. a single 8-Gig fiber plan is faster than 99% of options. The map's color is the AREA AVERAGE, because one fast plan on one street doesn't mean the whole area has it. Click any hex and you'll see both: the typical-for-the-area average AND that best-plan score.

Which states have the best fiber availability?

In our data the leaders are Rhode Island (89.5%), Connecticut (88.8%), North Dakota (87.3%). On the map, metros average high (fiber is both fast and widespread there), suburbs sit mid, and rural areas are low or grey.

Is satellite internet available everywhere?

Effectively yes — satellite (Starlink, HughesNet, Viasat) reaches ~every home, so it's never grey. But its Speed Score is modest, so the satellite map is a fairly uniform mid-tone: available everywhere, rarely the best option.

How many internet providers does a typical state have?

The median state has about 62 non-satellite providers, though most areas are served by only a few. The per-state count excludes the three nationwide satellite carriers.
