Find internet providers in Chicago, IL
Find internet offered in Chicago, IL – easily compare options from multiple providers to find the plan that best fits your needs.
FindBetterInternet was created by two guys with years of first-hand industry experience selling internet services online. Frankly, what we found left a lot to be desired. Internet providers can pay for their listings to be placed higher up the page, cookies can be captured, and your data can be shared for banner ads that stalk your online profile for the next week. We built FindBetterInternet to be different.
Our methodology translates the complex treasure trove of 115m locations on the FCC Broadband Map into one simple resource. We layer on pricing to help you sift through what’s good value.
We hope this is helpful for you and appreciate all the community’s support with this project. If you find it helpful, we do make a commission if you buy internet from a link on our address-check page. We pour that back into maintaining the site.
Every price and coverage figure on this site traces back to FCC Broadband Data Collection filings (the National Broadband Map); here’s exactly how we do it.

The 30-Second Verdict
UpdatedIn Chicago, your best bet is AT&T, covering ~96% of the city overall, with fiber reaching ~19% and speeds up to 5,000 Mbps. That top tier is address-specific, while AT&T’s basic copper footprint reaches ~45%, so verify the wiring before expecting fiber performance. In 60601, Astound Broadband is the clear local leader, with 75.7% on fiber, while Lincoln Park, 60614, is more competitive, with Astound fiber at 41.2%, Xfinity cable at 21.9%, and AT&T fiber at 19.1%. The University of Chicago area, 60637, is more cable-heavy, with Xfinity’s 1,200/35 Mbps tier reaching 77.4%, while AT&T fiber reaches 9.8% at 1,000/1,000 Mbps and 5.5% at 5,000/5,000 Mbps. That building-level variation matters for students at the University of Chicago, DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, and University of Illinois Chicago, since apartment wiring can differ and older copper can complicate Zoom, streaming, and gaming. Xfinity and Astound are the main wired alternatives, while fixed wireless from T-Mobile or Verizon can help where wired choices disappoint. Coverage can change street by street in Hyde Park, Lakeview, and Wicker Park, so confirm the exact address before signing up.

About AT&T
AT&T’s Fiber 300 costs $35/mo for the first 12 months, then $60/mo, for up to 300 Mbps both ways, while Fiber 1 GIG costs $50/mo for the first 12 months, then $90/mo, for up to 1000 Mbps both ways, making either a strong value. Fiber is the best fit for demanding work, streaming, and gaming, with up to 5000 Mbps for $95/mo for the first 12 months, then $135/mo, but availability is address-dependent: the 5 GIG plan reaches 18.8% of Chicago, while the 1 GIG, 500, and 300 plans each reach 32.1%. Where fiber is unavailable, Internet Air offers up to 300 Mbps both ways for $55/mo, then $60/mo, across 39.9% of the city, though fixed wireless can be less consistent, so check your address for fiber first.

Astound Broadband is a top-tier option in Chicago, led by fiber with up to 1500 Mbps download and 1500 Mbps upload and a Speed Score of 96/100, above the city’s average top speed score of 69. Because the best technology depends on your address, that fiber plan is available across 13.1% of the city, while Astound’s cable service is still a solid option with up to 1500 Mbps download, 50 Mbps upload, and a 90/100 Speed Score.
About Astound Broadband
Astound Broadband is a strong option in Chicago, especially for households that can get its fast fiber or cable service. Its fiber plan offers up to 1500 Mbps both ways with a Speed Score of 96/100, but reaches only 13.1% of census blocks, while cable offers up to 1500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload with a 90/100 score across 48.4% of census blocks, making it the more broadly available choice, though its upload speed may limit heavy remote work or large file uploads.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for Chicago
For households that need fast internet for streaming, work, and multiple devices, T-Mobile’s 5G fixed wireless is a competitive choice: All-In Home Internet offers up to 498 Mbps download and 55 Mbps upload with an 80/100 Speed Score, above Chicago’s 69 average. Rely Home Internet is a lower-priced option with up to 354 Mbps download and 55 Mbps upload and a 79/100 score, while both plans are available to 73.7% of Chicago. Fixed wireless performance can vary by location and network conditions, so check your address and compare available wired options if consistent low-latency performance is important.
About T-Mobile
Households that want solid everyday streaming, work, and browsing without relying on a wired provider may find T-Mobile a good fit, with All-In Home Internet offering up to 498 Mbps download and 55 Mbps upload for $70/mo promotional rate, then $80/mo, or Rely offering up to 354 Mbps download and 55 Mbps upload for $50/mo promotional rate, then $60/mo. These are good, adequate fixed-wireless options rather than excellent fiber or cable, and both are available to 73.7% of Chicago, so check your address because performance can vary and a faster wired alternative may be preferable for heavy simultaneous use.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for Chicago
Satellite internet offers broad reach, but its higher latency can affect gaming, video calls, and other real-time activities. Starlink’s Residential Max plan is available to 100.0% of Chicago and offers up to 400 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload for $130/mo, with a Speed Score of 73/100, above the city average of 69. That is good performance for satellite, but check other technologies available at your address if low latency or more consistent performance is important.
About Starlink
Satellite internet can cover homes broadly and handle everyday browsing, streaming, and work, but its higher latency may be limiting for fast-paced gaming and other real-time uses. Starlink offers up to 400 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload with 100.0% availability in Chicago, making it a practical option where wired service is unavailable, though you should check your address for fiber or cable first because those technologies are generally better for modern, latency-sensitive needs.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for Chicago
5G fixed wireless is a practical option for streaming, video calls, and everyday use, though performance can vary with signal and network conditions. Verizon’s 5G Home Plus plan has a Speed Score of 81/100, above Chicago’s city average of 69, with up to 1000 Mbps download and 75 Mbps upload, while 5G Home scores 79/100 with up to 300 Mbps download and 75 Mbps upload. Both plans are available to 60.7% of Chicago, so confirm your address and compare available wired options if consistent latency is especially important.
About Verizon
Verizon’s 5G fixed wireless service offers up to 1000 Mbps download and 75 Mbps upload with 5G Home Plus, or up to 300 Mbps download and 75 Mbps upload with 5G Home, making it a strong choice for streaming, video calls, and most home use, although fixed wireless can be less consistent than fiber or cable. Both plans are available to 60.7% of Chicago, so Verizon is worth checking at your address, with promotional pricing of $45/mo for 5G Home Plus and $35/mo for 5G Home before they rise to $70/mo and $60/mo, respectively.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for Chicago
At $94.99/mo for the first 12 months, then $119.99/mo, HughesNet Fusion buys up to 100 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, but its 32/100 Speed Score is below Chicago’s city average of 69. Satellite technology brings higher latency and limited performance compared with alternatives, so consider checking other providers available at your address first, particularly for gaming, video calls, and heavy streaming. Fusion is listed as available to 100.0% of Chicago, while the cheaper Select plan costs $49.99/mo for the first 12 months, then $74.99/mo, and offers up to 50 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload with a 14/100 Speed Score.
About HughesNet
HughesNet costs $39.99/mo for Lite with up to 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload, $49.99/mo for Select with up to 50 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, or $94.99/mo for Fusion with up to 100 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, so the value is broad access rather than especially strong performance. Since all three are satellite plans with below-average speed scores, I’d check your address for faster fiber or cable service first, while HughesNet’s 100.0% Chicago coverage makes it a practical fallback for basic browsing where better options are unavailable.

THE TAKEAWAY
Our recommendation for Chicago
Viasat is a limited-performance choice in Chicago, so shoppers should check what else is available at their address first. Its satellite plans both score 14/100, below the city average of 69: Essentials offers up to 55 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload, while Unleashed offers up to 34 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload, with both plans listed at 100.0% availability across Chicago.
About Viasat Inc
Viasat Inc is mainly a fallback option in Chicago, so check whether faster cable or fiber service is available at your address before choosing it. Its fastest satellite plan is available to 100.0% of the city and offers up to 55 Mbps down and 4 Mbps up, but its Speed Score is just 14/100, so it may feel limited for heavy streaming, video calls, or multiple users.

How We Analyze Internet in Chicago
FCC Broadband Data
We use the FCC National Broadband Map, updated twice a year with provider-reported coverage at the census block level.
Speed Score
Our proprietary score weights technology type (fiber=100%, cable=85%, etc.) with download (70%) and upload (30%) speeds, ranked as a state percentile.
Coverage Calculation
Provider coverage shows what percentage of census blocks in Chicago report service availability from each provider.
Data Coverage for Chicago
How We Calculate Speed Score
Our Speed Score is a state-level percentile ranking (0-100) that shows how a provider’s service compares to all other internet options available in your state.
The Formula:
We calculate a raw performance score using:
Technology Factor × (Download Speed × 70% + Upload Speed × 30%)
Technology Factors:
Not all connections are equal. We weight each technology based on real-world reliability and performance:
- Fiber: 100% – Fastest, most reliable technology
- Cable: 85% – High speeds, shared neighborhood bandwidth
- Fixed Wireless (Licensed): 70% – Dedicated spectrum, weather-dependent
- Copper/DSL: 65% – Distance-limited, aging infrastructure
- Fixed Wireless (Unlicensed): 60% – Shared spectrum, variable performance
- Satellite (LEO): 40% – Low-earth orbit (e.g., Starlink), higher latency
- Satellite (GEO): 15% – Geostationary orbit, significant latency
Percentile Ranking:
After calculating raw scores, we rank every service option in your state by geographic coverage (census blocks served). A score of 85 means this service performs better than 85% of all internet options available in your state.
Data Source: FCC National Broadband Map data, updated twice a year.
How We Calculate Capabilities
Estimated Capabilities predict how well each internet plan supports common household activities based on speed requirements and connection type.
Rating Scale:
- Excellent – Optimal performance, handles peak usage easily
- Good – Reliable performance with minimal issues
- Fair – Functional but may experience slowdowns during heavy use
- Poor – Not recommended; expect frequent buffering or lag
How We Rate Each Category:
Streaming
Based on download speed. 4K streaming requires 25+ Mbps per stream; HD requires 5+ Mbps. We account for multiple simultaneous streams.
Multi-device
Evaluates total bandwidth capacity divided by typical household device count (phones, tablets, smart TVs, computers). Fiber and cable handle many devices better than DSL or satellite.
Gaming
Considers both upload speed (for sending game data) and latency (ping time). Fiber and cable excel here; satellite connections struggle due to inherent signal delay.
Whole Home
Assesses whether the connection can reliably serve an entire household during peak evening hours. Factors in technology type (shared vs. dedicated bandwidth) and total speed capacity.
Note: Actual performance depends on your specific location, network congestion, and equipment quality.
